New Works Series

Playwrights Needed!

Spend a week workshopping your never-before-seen show, then we'll host a staged reading so you can get feedback! Watch your work come to life by taking the next step in your writing career!

What is the New Works Series?

This is a quarterly event with performances the first week of March, June, September, and December. (The March & June 2024 slots are FILLED! September & December 2024 are still open!)

Each featured playwright fills one of our quarterly slots. There are 4 rehearsals that week with one performance day. The performance day consists of the reading and then a moderated Q&A with the audience. We also have anonymous surveys for you to take with you at the end.

For more information about requirements and instructions for submitting, keep reading.

Where will it take place?

The exact location of rehearsals/performances may change depending on calendar availability but they will be in San Marcos.

What do I, the playwright, need to provide?

Your script and your time! Our team provides all the marketing, space arrangements, and insight you need to host your reading. You are welcome to bring on a director/actor team you admire, but we also have resources to fill those roles for you.

Is there pay?

Directors and Playwrights are compensated with a $150 stipend. We are unable to compensate actors at this time.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Is there a submission deadline?

No deadline! We accept submissions on a rolling basis. Once submitted, please allow 2 weeks to hear back from us. We appreciate your patience as we read every submission, and give each one ample attention.

What age/demographic should submissions be suitable for?

We accept submissions of all content ratings. Part of your submission process requires you to note any content warnings. We like to warn our audiences ahead of time. Those who fail to accurately note content warnings will not be encouraged to submit again.

Additionally, in support of our mission statement, we prioritize championing new and/or underrepresented voices and encourage all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, socio-economic backgrounds, educational backgrounds, and professional experiences to submit.

How do I submit?

Please email katie@brokethespians.org with your submission materials.

Submit a brief synopsis, character breakdown, and two to three sample scenes from your piece. Choose the scenes that you feel show the heart of your piece.

Please note any content warnings (adult themes, violence of any kind, adult language, sexual content etc.) We consider works of all content ratings! We like to warn our audiences ahead of time.

Include a professional resume. If you don’t have an artistic professional resume, an artist statement (approx. 150 word count) will work as well.

Answer the following:

Can I submit multiple works?

No. Only one submission per playwright per calendar year. You are welcome to resubmit each new calendar year. We do not consider new drafts of previously workshopped works.

I've submitted. Now what?

If we’d like to request a full copy of your play, you will hear from us within two weeks. After reviewing your full copy of your play, we will reach out to you via email with the next steps.

I don't have a play to submit, but I am interested in directing/acting.

If you’d like to be added to our directing/acting pool, please email katie@brokethespians.org expressing interest.
