The Bad Seed is a thriller play about the seemingly perfect eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark, whose angelic facade hides a psychopathic killer, revealed after her mother, Christine, discovers Rhoda's guilt in a classmate's drowning death at a picnic, prompting Christine to uncover her own dark family legacy and confront the horrifying truth that evil might be innate, with the play exploring themes of nature vs. nurture and hereditary sin through escalating suspense
